THE BOURNE IDENTITY
by Robert Ludlum (1980)
A is for Alpha, B is for Beta, and D is for Delta. C is for Charlie and Charlie is the enemy. Jason Bourne is assassinated, and his name is assumed by the executioner. The new Bourne continues to work in the dirty trade. When things go belly up, Bourne ends up belly down in the ocean off the coast of Marseille. Rescued by fishermen, Bourne is provided with field surgery that excavates several bullets and a metallic object from his back. When pressure is applied to the object, it projects a light beam onto the wall, with text listing a Swiss bank account number. Bourne rouses, claims amnesia, but the honourable captain returns the object to Bourne, who seems confounded by its presence. When the fishing crew return to shore, Bourne alights and heads to Switzerland in an attempt to unravel the mystery of his identity. As each step unveils a little more about who he is, Bourne can sense that he is getting closer to the truth. And with Carlos the Jackal seeking to retire Bourne permanently, Bourne had better put it all together in quick time! Fiction. 576 pages.
