SYDNEY HOMES BOARDED UP & FENCED OFF

Plywood boards | corrugated sheeting | barrier fences | chains with locks
• Are utilised to keep people out of houses rather than inside them
• Replace all human life in these once vibrant places
• Demonstrate who has power and who does not
Broken fences | disconnected gas meters | missing windows
• Indicate the property is an investment in land and not a home for people
• Highlight how core human needs are being wilfully ignored by government
• Represent the aesthetics of a society in decline
Empty houses | vacant buildings | abandoned warehouses | disused premises
• Are a social resource that should not be wasted through abandonment
• Are reasonably considered to be potential homes during a housing crisis
• Remain useful only insofar as they may be utilised to serve the local community
Homeless | cost of living | broke or thereabouts | emergency services
• Encampments outside city railway stations are growing in size as numbers swell
• Renters pay through the nose as most Sydney rents exceed $400 pw for a studio
• Many live in precarious situations; where can they escape to?
Housing crisis | property management | social policy and programme
• It remains the responsibility of the government to house each of us appropriately
• Basic human needs like housing must be protected from market forces
• A detailed national housing strategy is urgently needed
