Excerpt from my new novel
The scent of fresh cut grass
CONTEXT: The speech below is delivered by Marchman Killeen of RexPark corporation, primarily known for its business activities within the private military contractor sector. They participate in wars for profit.
After listening to this “promotional” speech, local activists and squatters decide to take on the evil corporation of RexPark. Together, they squat and occupy the local premises of RexPark, locking the front and rear doors of the building and hanging banners from the windows situated above the ground floor. The squatters then activate their pre-planned social media channel, the Department of Squatting.
After a week and a half of solid occupation, the squatters win a reprieve inasmuch as the building owners are AWOL and the local council publicly acknowledges there is nothing that they can do. Hence, no eviction is coming just yet. Hearing this news, the squatter activists swiftly establish a local community drop-in centre upon the site.
As the occupation progresses, the squatters receive a lot of information from the locals, who support their cause. They inform the squatters of many empty properties in the local area. The squatters develop an empty properties register to share this information.
THE BASTARD COUNTRY
“We cannot achieve our desired outcomes and realise our cherished ambitions by operating lawfully within our own national borders. Hence, we will need to first locate and then manage a jurisdiction which will in no way inhibit our desires and ambitions. This will be the Bastard Country. In due course and with proper application, the bastard country will come to resemble a corporate entity and will generate enormous profit for participants. This same entity will constitute the beating heart and thinking brain of our current enterprise. On the surface it will look like a country, but it will actually be a rather flexible corporate business entity. The bastard country is our plaything to do with as we wish.
“Because we value the bastard country, we must seek to ensure its longevity. We must protect it against competition and defend it from encroachment. We must further it in ways and by means that cause its core functions to metastasise within the local community. We must create dependency. This ensures that a host will be reluctant to evict or slay the parasite. As our corporate entity assumes the place of heart, brain, locus, and nexus, the host region or nation will transform into a zombie state. This is desirable and affords us great competitive advantage, largely because commercial and legal scrutiny dwindles as local chaos rises. Longevity is, moreover, to be buttressed by appropriate marketing and perception management to produce and maintain an image with depth and character, for public consumption. Of course, this image will remain quite unrelated to anything the entity may actually be engaged in. The image is a simulation only, which will be artfully constructed through a combination of circumspect dissimulation and necessary deception.
“Zero parameters will limit the bastard country. Indeed, our education informs us that profitable business trading has only one natural opponent, which is, restriction, either legal or moral. With this in mind, the bastard country will undermine, contradict, and subvert local custom and practice in order to create the necessary conditions for prosperity and success. National and international law are now deemed as detrimental impediments to the objectives of the bastard country. Imposition must be overthrown! Likewise, established industry standards such as those relating to proper health and safety, will also be eliminated. The bastard country thrives when the only surviving restriction is the one against curtailment.
“At surface level, the bastard country should appear to be a natural occurrence and emerge similar to a new discovery within the natural world. Under no circumstances should the bastard country disclose its true nature, which is that of a foreign takeover or gradual coup d’état. Our experience teaches us that current powerholders are likely to resist our progress. This is because they have become entrenched within the local social and economic structure and may feel themselves to be settled and comfortable. As a stubborn point of business, these powerholders must be displaced, and fresh faces that are attached to ambitions of their own, must be installed here. This turnover can be made to occur repeatedly, and it is wise to do so with some consistency to avoid the establishment of further resistance, which if ignored or neglected, may become hardened and organised.
“To operate in situ, we require a bastard country administered locally by a proxy that we control. The proxy should consist primarily of locals who evince the history and memory of the region. However, as the bastard country is ours in actuality, and only theirs by perception, we will need to adopt a position and posture that appeals to an already identified segment of the existing population. Our position is that history has carried us to this destination, that blood and honour are values in themselves, that our borders may be penetrated at any moment by malicious intruders, that a country and nation should expand horizontally rather than vertically, and that our enemies consistently lack important human qualities and are therefore subhuman. Our posture is one of violent antipathy toward an imagined enemy, who may be situated nearby and is considered competent at waging war and capable of achieving victory. Although this approach may seem to be more thorough than necessary for a business to instantiate itself and then maintain profitability, it remains the preferred approach. Our longstanding knowledge indicates that our business requires privacy and secrecy to function at its highest level of performance, and that these requirements are best achieved through ongoing and elaborate distraction.
“Once enacted, the bastard country will create a material space for activities and pursuits that may be unattractive, unpalatable, undesirable, and unlawful elsewhere. Just as every prohibition creates the impetus for a black market, the bastard country derives from this scenario a great sense of opportunity. Hence, the bastard country shall be made available for scientific experimentation which would otherwise be banned if the bastard country had subjected itself to moral convention and international law. This position evinces good business sense! This action evokes courage and initiative! This project elicits envy from our competitors!
“The primary areas for investment are identified as military-technical, biological, trafficking, extreme vice, and unique procurement and bespoke sales. Military-technical will include weapons manufacture, whereas biological will encompass medical research surrounding bacterium, viruses, and known diseases that may adversely affect plants, animals, and/or humans. The competitive edge that our entity brings to market is to be found within one specific arena, that is, product testing upon live human participants is to be permitted. Where other countries and even international law prohibits and forbids such conduct, the bastard country shall embrace this exciting business opportunity and perform experiments upon live human involuntary participants. To ensure an organised approach is made manifest in the field, which in turn will preserve profitability over a longer term, a section of the local population will need to be defined as subhuman. This is because if they persist on equal terms with their countrymen and women then they will also have rights and entitlements. Such a development may lead to serious harm for the entity. Therefore, it is necessary to impose new class distinctions to create the appropriate preconditions for our business venture. However, these new class divisions are to be enacted by the local leadership, and not by us. Only in this way can the cultural upheaval appear to come from below and appear revolutionary in nature rather than reactionary.
“Trafficking is a complex matrix of matching and processing orders for our customers. It involves road and rail transportation, sea shipping, and air cargo service. Due to the nature of what we carry, and to where, and to whom, and for what precise purpose, we only employ professionals who practice discretion. This safeguards our future and builds confidence in our brand. Our trafficking arm further facilitates our business by acting as a tie-in with our military-technical, biological, extreme vice, and procurement service. Quite apart from the sale and delivery of military-technical and biological items, subject to future availability, of course, is the trade in human flesh. The bastard country will serve as a central hub within a wider nodal network that relies on human cargo. Although there remains some money to be recouped through transporting illegal aliens to desirable locations, this is not the dominant focus here. The bastard country shall provide hardware that may be utilised in various capacities: mass labour force and personal consumption orders are normative. Bulk orders accepted with advance notice.
“Extreme vice is service oriented and is reliant on the successful procurement of hardware. To ensure supply can meet demand, legitimate interaction sites will have to be established and maintained. Front groups will be required to inaugurate new youth organisations and then carry on their usual activities. An orphanage can be commandeered through board takeover, or one can be established from scratch. Similarly, a children’s hospital or borstal may suffice. A charity for children can be incorporated and once up and running, can provide reasonable cover for our operation. After procurement, transportation and delivery remain. All three aspects are conducted professionally and with care. As you can see, unique procurement and bespoke sales are central to our business plan. Alongside live human flesh is our trade in live human tissue, including freshly harvested organs, as well as quality extracted blood and plasma products. Why should anyone be beholden to a hospital waiting list? To complement our extreme vice trading arm, we will also offer adrenochrome for sale, which in turn will generate interest in our other products that we are currently determined to bring to market.
“Our single point of vulnerability lies within proxy control. Without this, our entity is at the mercy of the vagaries of local human action. Hence, exclusive proxy control is non-negotiable and constitutes a critical element within our programme. To accomplish this, the rallying points of working class anger, initiative, and organisation must be foreclosed upon. Local thought leaders who publicly enunciate gestalt and zeitgeist, or attempt to, are provocateurs and saboteurs. They must be displaced. Once the facts on the ground resemble favourable circumstances, we can determine that successful proxy control is in play. In terms of timeline, proxy control of the bastard country should occur prior to market entry. Subsequent to positive changes taking root upon the ground, our entity remains ready to be installed. In this way, we enter the bastard country without undue distraction, and maintain a tight focus on the enterprise model. Profitability will swiftly ensue. “As you by now appreciate, the bastard country is unconcerned with established controls. Matters pertaining to prohibition and lawfulness are regarded as inconsequential and moot. This alone constitutes our unique market proposition and communicates the essence of our enterprise. The time to locate the business jurisdiction is now! The time to establish the special economic zone is now! Pretenders beware! We mean business! We mean business in its purest form, utterly devoid of attachment to sentimentality, in the land of the bastard country!”
